"Y" Series Number-plates
page 3

The circumstances surrounding the issuing of these Jervis Bay Territory plates has not yet come to light. They are nolonger being issued. Note that for the first time the slogan has been screen printed. I guess the low volume of plates meant that an embossing die could not be justified.

Plates issued were from YZO-000 to YZO-999 made? and
YZO-000 to YZO-200 issued?.

The shape of many modern cars today preclude the satisfactory mounting of plates as the size of the plate can causes problems with air flows and fitment in general. These plates come in pairs, the rear is the same as previously made (steel) but the front is a shorter plate of the same length (aluminium).

Plates issued were from YZP-000 to YZP-999.

The difference with this plate is that two more screw holes have been provided. This seem to have been in response to a request by manufacturers of Japanese cars as the new holes line up perfectly with the threaded holes provided on these cars. As the ACT was quickly running out of Y prefix combinations all previously unissued prefixes were used up. There was no real effort made to issue any of these in a logical sequence.

Plates issued were from YZQ-000 to YZZ-999,
YAQ-000 to YAQ-999, YBQ-000 to YBQ-999,
YCQ-000 to YCQ-999, YDQ-000 to YDQ-999,
YEQ-000 to YEQ-999, YFQ-000 to YFQ-999,
YGQ-000 to YGQ-999, YHQ-000 to YHQ-999,
YKL-000 to YLW-999 & YII-000 to YII-999.

When the NTPI were making ACT plates they attempted to convert ACT to use aluminium for the base (as was the case in the Northern Territory at the time) to no avail. These plates are now the first ACT plates to use the aluminium base and the new "hot foil" process for the blue colour characters and slogan on the plate.

Plates issued were from YLX-000 to YLZ-999 and
YOI-000 to YOI-999.

The ACT answer to running out of "Y" plates was to invent more! Start all over again but change the last number to a letter. However the letters I or O are not used in the last position.

Plates issued were from YAA-00A to YAA-99Z,
YAC-00A to YAC-99Z and YAE-00A to YAG-99Z.

Very controversial slogan "FEEL THE POWER OF CANBERRA" only lasted 8 months.

Plates issued were from YAB-00A to YAB-99Z and
YAD-00A to YAD-99Z.

After a survey the most favoured slogan was "THE NATION"S CAPITAL". So here it is back but in a screened design not embossed as previously.

Plates issued were from YAH-00A onwards.

The very close second choice slogan was "HEART OF THE NATION". This one is also screened.

Plates issued were from YAI-00A onwards.
