After more than 41 years of issuing numeral only number-plates the ACT introduced an alpha-numeric plate for passenger cars. In 1954 the ACT had been allocated the series YAA-000 to YZZ-999 for this purpose by the Australian Transport Advisory Council. It took until the 20th of September 1968 for the "Y" plates to come into existance. These were the first plates in Australia to use the new reflective sheeting for the background on a permanent basis.
Plates issued were from YAA-000 to YKK-999.

At the time the maker was notified that there was an error with the YMK prefix plates they were still being made with the error. Production stoppped abruptly at YMU-466! All plates in the range YMK-024 to YMO-999 were returned to the factory to have the "ACT" inserted in the small place to the left of the "Y". Plates in the range YMP-000 to YMU-466 were still at the factory and also had the "ACT" squashed in before being dispached. The YMP prefix was the first squashed prefix to be seen on the roads.

These were never officially on vehicles but the story behind them is none the less interesting ...
These plates were commissioned only a short time before an election was due to be held to decide a new Federal Government. The election saw a new government returned and the "HEART OF THE NATION" slogan was not to be. The newly elected Government considered the slogan political and or associated with the previous Government and ordered that all the plates be destroyed.
